2018 Season Schedule (ENDED)
SOLD OUT Sunday, July 22nd - 7:30 PM
We’re simply thrilled to have our good friend Paula Poundstone perform on our stage yet again! With her smart, observational humor and legendary spontaneous interaction with the crowd, she is one of our country’s preeminent comedians, improvising with her audience like a jazz musician, swinging in unexpected directions without a net.
Of course, Paula has long been a hugely popular regular on NPR’s #1 show, the weekly comedy news quiz, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, with long-time host, Peter Sagal beaming, “Paula Poundstone is the funniest human being I have ever known. Everything she does, think or says is hilarious. She is made of funny….Air becomes funny having been breathed by her.”
You can now catch her regular weekly podcast, Live from the Poundstone Institute, and for a great, fun read, pick up her second book, the best-selling The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness.
Friday & Saturday, July 27th & 28th - 8:00 PM
A RADIO PLAY DOUBLE FEATURE — LIVE ON OUR STAGE!"CASABLANCA" & "THE THIN MAN"
Directed by Jill Klein & Dennis Hunter
Two beloved classics from the Golden Age of Radio recreated on our stage, complete with the original Lux Soap commercials – wonderful, and often very funny, representations of over-the-top “branding” from another time.
Casablanca has all the elements and drama of the well-loved movie - a man, a woman, a secret, a separation, Paris, World War II, Ricks' gin joint, Nazis and more! Then take a turn with the The Thin Man, an iconic comedy-mystery, based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett, which set the template for countless films and TV series to follow. Laugh the night away with playful, rapid-fire dialogue from retired private detective, Nick, and his wealthy heiress wife Nora, as they work their way through to the convoluted crime’s solution!
Sunday, July 29th - 7:30 PM
THE LAO TIZER QUARTET featuring KAREN BRIGGS
This “Jazz Group of the Year” nominee makes its return to our venue in support of its brand-new Songs From The Swinghouse, a Billboard Jazz Top 10 CD/DVD combo-pack release.
Led by pianist, keyboardist, composer - and former “Best New Jazz Artist” nominee - Lao Tizer (Special EFX, Down To The Bone), the quartet also features violinist extraordinaire Karen Briggs (Yanni, Stanley Clarke), New Zealand born drum-phenom Dylan Elise (Blood, Sweat & Tears) and Grammy-nominated bassist Ric Fierabracci (Chick Corea, Blood Sweat & Tears).
A memorable evening of music not to be missed! For more, check out their YouTube!
This evening is made possible through the sponsorship of a special donor.
Saturday, August 4th - 8:00 PM
We welcome back Louden Swain’s Rob Benedict, Billy Moran, Michael Borja and Stephen Norton and their wonderful upbeat energy and irresistible melodies.
Over the course of nearly two decades, this world-class D.I.Y. combo has quietly built a powerful body of recordings, earning a fervent grass-roots fan base and an impressive backlog of critical acclaim. They have also released a series of accomplished albums, toured successfully throughout North America and Europe, and emerged as a popular Youtube sensation—all without the support of a mainstream record label.
A staged reading of Vidal’s political satire, directed by Eileen Mack Knight
Set during the 1968 Presidential campaign, Weekend is a witty, sardonic comedy about a Republican Senator who is about to announce his candidacy for his party's nomination when his son arrives with potentially politically damaging news. Prejudice, blackmail, self-righteousness and opportunism become a potent mix as the candidate and those around him conspire with well-calculated maneuvers to serve their own ends. Sound familiar?
Saturday, August 18th - 7:30 PM
FAMILY FUN NIGHT: DANA DANIELS & MICHAEL RAYNER
Guaranteed to entertain human beings of all ages!
One of our venue’s family favorites, “Juggler-in-Peril” Michael Rayner, returns with his interactive – and hilarious – act, which includes balancing a wheelbarrow on his head! He’s joined by comedy magician extraordinaire Dana Daniels, teamed with his Psychic Parrot Luigi. Tonight, Dana will set out to prove his little green friend is truly clairvoyant by performing incredible magic blended with rapid-fire clean comedy and audience participation.
Dana’s many TV appearances include Stand up Live, America’s Got Talent, Evening at the Improv, CBS Morning Show, NBC’s Comedy Club, News Radio and Masters of Illusions. He’s also opened for such stars as Ray Romano, Amy Grant, Vince Gill and Randy Travis – with his unique twist on magic that separates him from other magicians…and separates Luigi from other poultry!
Bring the kids in pajamas so they can fall asleep on the ride home!
SOLD OUT Sunday, August 19th - 7:00 PM - Presented by Subaru of Sherman Oaks
MAZ JOBRANI & FRIENDS
This very funny man has found time to join us for another night of his own brand of warm-hearted, observational comedy.
Maz’s first original Netflix standup special, Immigrant, was filmed at the Kennedy Center last year and is currently available for streaming. He also has 3 solo specials on Showtime: Brown and Friendly, I Come in Peace and I’m Not a Terrorist, But I’ve Played One on TV – which was also the title of his LA Times bestselling book.
In 2016 Maz performed at the White House where he had the privilege of introducing Michelle Obama. He recently starred as the title character in his award-winning indie comedy, Jimmy Vestvood: American Hero, has co-starred in many other films and made over 50 guest appearances on television’s most popular shows.
Maz was a founding member of The Axis of Evil Comedy Tour, is a recurring panelist on NPR’s hit comedy news quiz, Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me!, has given 2 TED talks, performed on virtually all the late night shows and was even the commencement speaker at UC Berkeley’s graduation ceremonies last spring. Wow!
INTRODUCING MAZ's OPENING ACTS
Born in Queens, Candice Thompson currently resides in Los Angeles and is one of the newest paid regulars at The Comedy Store. The perfect mix of both East and West coasts with just the wrong amount of Midwest street cred, she comes from an ethnically mixed family with both her parents being of African-American and Native American descent and one day she hopes to parlay her racial ambiguity into huge action roles just like Dwayne Johnson did. She's appeared on Last Comic Standing and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and you can look forward to seeing her on Comedy Central's The New Negroes. Candice wants to thank her friend and family for all their support but most of all she wants to thank God for making her better than everybody.
A native to Venezuela who grew up in Washington, D.C., Francisco Ramos recently shot his first HBO special, Entre Nos, that will air in this summer. A top-ten finalist on Last Comic Standing, he's toured across North America driven by his constant desire to hone his unique approach to comedy - which is also seen in his ability to create characters as an actor and voice-over artist. The world of animation has always been a passion and his specialized tone has landed him many roles, most notably the character of Marmoset in film Rio with Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg. Francisco has also appeared on @midnight on Comedy Central, several times on Jimmy Kimmel Live and recently worked on Showtime's Shameless, and Netflix's Angie Tribeca and Lady Dynamite. And American Latino has produced a documentary on Francisco on his rise as a comic for Latino Out Loud (LOL).
SOLD OUT Saturday, August 25th - 8:00 PM
One of our venue’s absolute favorite vocalists offers another night of soulful classics and great standards, performed with his impeccable taste and styling – and backed by the world-class quintet that supports his ever-popular shows in clubs all over LA.
This talented singer-songwriter has worked with many musical greats over the years - from Roberta Flack and Ray Charles to Burt Bacharach and Eric Burdon - and his sweet voice can be heard on the tracks of Boston Legal and Sons of Anarchy wherever they play.
Bring someone you love for a night of magical music under the stars!
Sunday, August 26th - 8:00 PM
MOVIE NIGHT: "A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM" (2018)
Q&A with director Casey Wilder Mott will follow the screening.
Starring Rachael Leigh Cook, Lily Rabe, Hamish Linklater, Finn Wittrock, Fran Kranz, Avan Jogia, Ted Levine, Paz De La Huerta, Saul William, Mai Doi Todd and Charity Wakefield.
The LA Times pronounces Casey Wilder Mott’s fresh reinvention of the Shakespeare classic "a breezy, cute-and-clever confection that’s tailor-made for a sultry midsummer’s night.”
Join us for just such a night, under the stars in the same hills where the film was shot.
Filmed in Topanga Canyon, Mott sets the play in present-day Hollywood.
Hollywood is sometimes called The Dream Factory – and like the world of Shakespeare’s Dream, it’s a place where fantasy and reality collide. With a cast of established and emerging stars, as well as a pulsing original soundtrack, the film will appeal to ardent fans of the Bard as well as audiences discovering Shakespeare for the first time.
“A pure delight.” – Film Threat.
“A disarmingly effective, visually vibrant frolic.” – Los Angeles Times
“A feat of transformation…with spot-on comic performances. Career building movers and shakers meet pagan spirits on dark canyon roads.” – Hollywood Reporter.
This screening made possible through the generosity of TreePeople Board Member Sarah Smith, 5B Productions, and Brainstorm Media.
DATE AND TIME CHANGE - Sunday, September 9th - 7:30 PM
This energetically wild and eclectic band was a huge crowd favorite when they first performed with us a few summers back. Come and join the fun!
What began as a bunch of friends jamming for food at local hot spots quickly became a party like no other in LA. A collective of ten musicians, singers, and often a squad of dancers, "The Hoot” plays an exciting blend of wild original tunes and eclectic covers from the likes of Dean Martin and Johnny Cash to Lyle Lovett and Dr. Dre.
LA Hootenanny was the house band at steampunk bar Villains Tavern, and has played regularly at the Santa Anita racetrack, American Legion Hollywood Post 33's ballroom and The Federal Bar in NoHo.
Cumbia/funk/house band L'équipe Tambora believes in the power of music, storytelling, and art to move and inspire people, and to bring positive change. To get a taste, check out their soulful Rio Yuma - about a significant cultural and environmental symbol for Colombia and the Caribbean. Don’t miss your chance to experience their joyous sound live and get your spirit refueled!

The S. Mark Taper Foundation Amphitheatre was built in 1997 with the support of many generous donors, including Steve Martin, Bonnie Raitt, Ron Howard and Johnny Carson. The Actors Conservatory Ensemble (ACE), a volunteer theatre company run by TreePeople Director of Park Operations Jim Hardie, has co-presented many concerts, play readings, comedy nights and family shows in the venue since 1998 under the banner of “Once Upon a Canyon Night.”
All of the proceeds from these shows have benefited TreePeople and Coldwater Canyon Park Most of the performers and backstage personnel volunteer their time to make this possible. 2018 marks ACE's 16th season in this wonderful venue.
