Community Organizer (San Fernando Valley)

TreePeople is seeking to hire a San Fernando Valley resident, preferably who currently resides in and/or grew up in the San Fernando Valley, to join our team as a Community Organizer.
The Community Organizer will lead TreePeople’s community engagement efforts to maintain more than 1,000 recently planted and distributed trees in communities within the San Fernando Valley area. This individual will be responsible for making lasting connections with and between community members, community-based organizations, public agencies, churches, schools, parent centers, businesses and other key stakeholders in support of TreePeople’s mission to inspire, engage and support the community to increase the urban tree canopy and address climate threats in the San Fernando Valley and across the region.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead community outreach efforts, recruiting a diverse group of stakeholders that includes but is not limited to residents, community-based organizations, faith-based groups, youth groups, parent centers, neighborhood associations, schools, advocacy groups, businesses, and public officials.
- Identify key community stakeholders in the project area(s) to leverage TreePeople’s work and establish and maintain relationships in the community.
- Serve as a community liaison by participating in and representing TreePeople at meetings, fundraising, marketing, membership, volunteer events, etc.
- Carry out TreePeople’s model for tree planting, tree care and community engagement.
- Recruit and train community champions to be Community Foresters.
- Lead community engagement events in which volunteers and organizers physically plant and care for trees.
- Support volunteer event preparation, helping to load trucks with supplies and tools.
- Assist other team members at volunteer events, including weekends and some evenings.
- Network and cultivate relationships with current and new community stakeholders.
- Maintain and update Spanish bilingual outreach materials for community events and presentations.
- Conduct tree care activities, such as watering, light pruning, and re-mulching.
- Integrate into or build coalitions, coordinate activities with coalition partners and recruit coalition members; coordinate the content and logistics for public events and large-scale mobilizations; and connect organizing work with research, public policy, and communications designated campaigns.
- Other duties as assigned.

Grant Billing Specialist

We are seeking a Grant Billing Specialist to assist the Operations department. The ideal candidate is a team player and is familiar with the non-profit grant/program funding process. This position will be responsible for conducting grant invoicing and monitoring grant transactions to ensure contract compliance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Obtain invoices and assign appropriate billing codes for correct reporting and payment
- Prepare contract invoices, and backup documentation, monitor grant expenditures and work with program staff on maximizing grant use.
- Maintain reports for the grant billing process and prepare grant and contract invoices on a timely basis.
- Monitor budget modification timelines and assists in the preparation of budget modifications and submissions to funders as necessary.
- Communicate with fiscal contacts at funding sources for information needed and problem resolution.
- Maintain balance sheet detail and reconciliations for grants receivable and grants revenue on an ongoing basis.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Mountain Reforestation Program Manager

TreePeople unites with communities to grow a greener, shadier and more water-secure region at homes, neighborhoods, schools and in the local mountains.
The Mountain Reforestation Program Manager works directly with the Director of Mountain Forestry to design, implement and oversee restoration, reforestation programs and studies of Montane Forest ecosystems, in the Angeles National Forest and LA’s neighboring ranges of mountains or wildland areas, with the assistance of the Mountain Forestry Coordinators and in direct cooperation with TreePeople's partners and grantors.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, organize and implement several programs of ecological restoration, reforestation or studies in high elevation Montane Forests to meet TreePeople's goals and grant's deliverables, schedules and budgets.
- Help recruit, train and manage the team of Mountain Forestry Coordinators, to ensure success of activities and volunteer engagement.
- Oversee all activities related to data collection, surveys and monitoring of the programs overseen, in order to draft reports to funders, grantors and partners.
- Help establish, maintain and develop multiple-partner relationships, including but not limited to, the US Forest Service, National Park Service, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, National Forest Foundation, local Universities Research Departments and various non-profit partners or subcontractors.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist TreePeople's development team in securing potential new funding and projects.
- Assist in volunteer recruitment strategies and train volunteers to become Reforestation Supervisors.
- Assist in developing engagement and educational material relevant to Mountain Forestry.
- Purchase materials, tools and supplies for the Program, and maintain inventory.
- Coordinate with the nursery for plant material needs and staff support.

North LA Regional Educator

This position will work in coordination with TreePeople's Natural Connections Program. TreePeople’s Natural Connections Program works to aid underserved communities, experiencing a lack of access to outdoor, natural spaces in the acquisition of tools, resources and information needed for the facilitation of new experiences out in nature.
Center to our mission is environmental education and access for community members of all ages. TreePeople takes complex environmental topics and leads with fun, creativity and inclusivity as we connect millions to trees, plants, water, air and soil.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver intentional, fun and educational experiences to youth, community and family groups looking to get involved.
- Deliver weekday and weekend guided tours through natural spaces for young people, community and family groups.
- Deliver monthly moonlight walks and family tours for the public on select weekends.

- Salesforce maintenance of all contacts and nature trip tracking.
- Support the Eco-Tours program: ensuring the accomplishment of field trips to Coldwater Canyon Park by a wide array of family groups and students across all of Los Angeles County.

Outdoor Equity Programs Assistant

We are seeking a Programs Assistant to support our Outdoor Equity department and staff. The ideal candidate is a highly organized team player with an interest in environmental education. This position will be responsible for clerical, administrative and general office tasks to support the workflow within the department.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform routine administrative tasks for on-site and virtual tours, including data entry, sign in sheets, processing payments, email inquiries and visitor requests.
- Maintain a high volume of complex calendars including scheduling multiple events on the same day.
- Act as the liaison between patrons and eco-educators.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Basic understanding of effective administrative skills.

Outdoor Equity Program Manager
TreePeople is an environmental nonprofit organization that is mobilizing people, business, philanthropists, and public agencies to work together to create green, resilient communities by planting trees, capturing rainwater, greening schools, and providing fun environmental educational activities. We inspire, engage, and support the community to increase the urban tree canopy and address climate threats and environmental justice in Los Angeles and across the region.
We seek an energetic, passionate, highly-organized Program Manager to oversee the Natural Connections program. The Natural Connections program connects thousands of community members and young people from underserved communities to the beauty, wonder and awe of our natural world. The program centers on green spaces within communities and also farther away natural open space lands.
The Program Manager of Outdoor Access will be a key part of TreePeople’s environmental education team, partnering with the Director of Education and Outdoor Equity and the Senior Manager of Outdoor Access to support and facilitate the Natural Connections program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the Senior Manager of Outdoor Equity to execute the vision, goals and deliverables of our current Natural Connections access program.
- Develop innovative, creative and inspiring educational programming that educates youth and families on natural systems relevant to their community watershed and how it all connects to other watersheds and the ocean.
- Build partnerships with youth and families from the Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena, Torrance, Wilmington, Carson, and San Fernando Valley communities to foster activities and experiences that promote stewardship of natural resources through education, exposure, and hands-on learning.
- Build and implement a strong outreach plan to reach as many schools and community members centered in our targeted programming regions.
- Work with the Director of Education and Outdoor Equity and Senior Manager of Outdoor Equity to develop strategic objectives that are centered around growing TreePeople’s outdoor access program work.
- Assist with updating our programs and toolkits focused on healthy watersheds and ocean protection to inspire and engage people while also aligning to relevant education standards.
- Assist with assessing our programs to ensure they intentionally integrate equity, inclusion and cultural relevance.
- Assist in writing reports and communicating with our funders on various deliverables that are being met via our grants.
- Represent TreePeople in the community.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience managing educational programs that are innovative and creative.
- Recent, proven experience working with schools and community members, ideally on environmental projects.
- Community-oriented individual who is adept at mobilizing and prioritizing the needs of a community.
- Should have an understanding of equity, inclusion and cultural relevancy.
- Commitment to improving the environment through education. Requires some background in educational theory and methodology. Some background in the Next Generation Science Standards is a plus.
- An understanding of ecological systems and awareness of current environmental issues, including the impacts of urban development and green solutions.
- Knowledge of local watersheds and their connection to the ocean is a plus.
- The ability and willingness to visit school sites across L.A. County and communicate with school district personnel, administrators, educators, and youth via telephone, email and fax.

Park Assistant

We are seeking a Park Assistant to join our dedicated team. This position will be responsible for the appearance, health and safety of our Coldwater Canyon Park location. Under the supervision of the Director of Park Operations, the Park Assistant will perform a variety of maintenance tasks that include the general clean up and daily maintenance of the park grounds and related on-site buildings.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform routine grounds maintenance on a daily basis.
- Ensure restrooms are stocked with supplies.
- Assist in general grounds maintenance – watering, sweeping, raking, mulching, light repairs, walkway and parking lot clearance.
- Assist with the maintenance of hiking trails, picnic tables and other park related equipment.
- Help with tree and brush removal, as appropriate to skills.
- Prepare and clean venues and facilities for special events, before and after.

We seek an energetic and passionate Regional Educator for the South Los Angeles area to deliver educational experiences to youth, community and family groups looking to get involved. The ideal candidate possesses a sound grasp of ecology and environmental issues, a basic understanding of effective educational methods, cross-cultural sensitivity, and a playful, sense of fun.
This position will work in coordination with TreePeople's Natural Connections Program. TreePeople’s Natural Connections Program works to aid underserved communities, experiencing a lack of access to outdoor, natural spaces in the acquisition of tools, resources and information needed for the facilitation of new experiences out in nature.
Center to our mission is environmental education and access for community members of all ages. TreePeople takes complex environmental topics and leads with fun, creativity and inclusivity as we connect millions to trees, plants, water, air and soil.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver intentional, fun and educational experiences to youth, community and family groups looking to get involved.
- Deliver weekday and weekend guided tours through natural spaces for young people, community and family groups.
- Deliver monthly moonlight walks and family tours for the public on select weekends.
- Deliver private tours, as needed.
- Provide in-class educational opportunities at schools.
- Deliver other educational programs, as needed.
- Maintain all equipment, displays and props.
- Participate in educator and TreePeople All-Staff gatherings.
REQUIREMENTS:

TreePeople is seeking an energetic and passionate Regional Coordinator to help lead TreePeople's Natural Connections Program in the South Los Angeles area. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate nature trips to outdoor settings, including booking tours, transportation, and catering for events.
- Build, establish and maintain partnerships with schools, administrators, school districts, and youth that inspire, engage and support people to take personal responsibility for the urban environment.
- Work in coordination with TreePeople’s greater Marketing and Communications team to advertise and coordinate nature trips.
- Recruit and network with teachers and students to encourage them to participate in the Natural Connections program, guiding outdoor nature trips that help youth, community and family groups build connections with nature.
- Manage TreePeople’s educator and administrator contact database.
- Facilitate outreach opportunities at educator conferences and community events, giving presentations about Natural Connections in school district meetings and local events targeted to youth, community and family groups.
- Produce high caliber, professional style memorandums and written correspondence.
- Post-event information collection, tracking and reporting.
- Salesforce maintenance of all contacts and nature trip tracking.
- Support the Eco-Tours program: ensuring the accomplishment of field trips to Coldwater Canyon Park by a wide array of family groups and students across all of Los Angeles County.
- Represent TreePeople and the Natural Connections Program in the community.
- Other duties as assigned.

Youth Leadership Coordinator
With more than 6.2 million students in California K-12 public schools and over 20% of Los Angeles County’s 10 million residents under the age of 18, young people hold a critical role in changing the world’s response to climate change, inequities and justice. TreePeople is determined to inspire, engage, train and support millions of young people to take action to build healthy and equitable communities.
TreePeople is seeking an energetic, environment passionate Youth Leadership Coordinator to join our youth leadership program team. This program focuses on inspiring, engaging, training and supporting K-12 students to become leaders in their communities, green their school campuses and surrounding communities and become agents for climate resilience. The ideal candidate must be a community-oriented individual who is adept at mobilizing and prioritizing the needs of a community and have a strong commitment to improving the environment through education. This position will work closely with teachers and student groups in classes, on-campus environmental (eco) clubs, after school groups, community groups and with young people who are leaders in their communities or schools. In addition, this position is responsible for implementing current and future requirements for multiple funding sources.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Recruit, engage, and support groups of students around Los Angeles County.
- Support and facilitate the creation of TreePeople EcoClubs in schools, including guiding the election and project selection processes.
- Assist individual youth leaders to connect with TreePeople opportunities and take on leadership roles in their community.
- Support student project management, including guiding them through completing administrative and logistical tasks necessary for project completion.
- Maintain Youth Leadership programs operations through various administrative and creative tasks.
- Create and maintain relationships (network) with local youth programs, agencies, and the like.
- Assist in administering evaluation instruments and collecting assessment data.
- Track and report on projects and program data on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
- Write and produce high-caliber and professional memorandums, correspondence and reports.
- Support TreePeople in the development and delivery of special projects, other programs and events.
- Represent TreePeople in the community.
- Other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience in working with schools and children (13-18 years of age) on environmental projects in the Greater Los Angeles areas (South LA, Southeast LA, Northeast San Fernando Valley).
- Background in educational theory and methodology, waste and water issue are a plus.
- Understanding of ecological systems and awareness of current environmental issues, including impacts of urban development and green solutions is strongly desired.
- Experience in project management.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking.
- Solid presentation skills, including experience presenting at workshops, community and agency meetings.
- Able to perform physical work on a regular basis that includes but is not limited to loading planting tools on trucks, using planting tools lift up to 15 pounds trees as needed.
- Highly organized, detailed oriented, strong work ethic, friendly, smart, proactive and a quick learner.
- Knowledge of environmental, equity and education issues especially urban water and/or green-infrastructure issues in the Los Angeles region and engaging local communities.
- Works independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to remain flexible and adapt to multiple processes prone to change.
- Ability to visit school sites across the Greater Los Angeles Area on a regular basis. Valid CA Driver’s License, proof of insurance and reliable transportation a must.

We are seeking individuals to join the AmeriCorps program and work with TreePeople staff to restore native ecosystems and grow greener, shadier communities throughout Los Angeles County. Full-time positions available starting June 6th 2023 for 300 hours of service.
TreePeople is an environmental nonprofit whose mission is to engage, inspire and support people to take personal responsibility for the environment, making it safe, healthy, fun and sustainable, and to share the process as a model for the world. TreePeople is among the largest independent environmental organizations in California. Sustained by a staff of educators, organizers and foresters as well as thousands of trained volunteers, TreePeople plays a leading role in mobilizing communities to work together to achieve climate resilience. Over the past four decades, TreePeople has engaged more than 3 million people in planting and caring for more than 3 million trees.
AmeriCorps members who join TreePeople will have opportunities to support urban tree planting and care projects throughout Los Angeles County as well as wildfire prevention and forest restoration projects in the Angeles National Forest and the Santa Monica Mountains focused on invasive species removal and reintroduction of native trees and plants. In addition, AmeriCorps members will have robust opportunities to learn about Los Angeles ecology, plant identification, and best practices in environmental field work.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plant and care for native plants and tree seedlings in wildland areas.
- Plant and care for 15-gallon street trees.
- Remove invasive species and flash fuels from wildland areas.
- Organize, manage and facilitate restoration, planting and care events, and monitor the progress at restoration sites.
- Support the participation of volunteers in urban tree planting and care events as well as forest restoration events.
- Maintain positive communication with community members to encourage ongoing tree care by residents.
- Participate in formal and informal trainings.
- Support TreePeople’s nursery by participating in seed collection and treatment as well as propagation related activity as needed.
BENEFITS:
After successfully completing your AmeriCorps service term and enrolling in the National Service Trust, you are eligible to receive an education award totaling up to $1,459.26 for the full 300 hour term of service. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans, student loan forbearance, interest payments, and/or to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs. AmeriCorps members may be eligible for student loan forbearance for qualified student loans during their term of service.

REQUIREMENTS:
TreePeople seeks AmeriCorps members that are interested in the environment, urban greening, forestry, climate resilience, and environmental justice. TreePeople would love for AmeriCorps members to be from and of the communities we aim to serve. Additionally, the following characteristics provide insight into qualifications for this position:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have a GED or a high school diploma.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. Those with an Authorization to work in the U.S. or DACA status unfortunately are not eligible at this time.
- Strong leadership, team-building and problem-solving skills.
- Highly organized, friendly, proactive and a quick learner.
- Interest in climate resilience and environmental issues impacting communities and wilderness throughout Southern California.
- Comfortable in wilderness areas.
- Must follow safe work practices.
- Requires heavy lifting over 40 lbs., often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces.
- Ability to perform physical labor, including moving trees and loading and unloading heavy tools onto trucks, and the ability to hike off-trail on mountainsides.
- Have served less than 3 terms in an AmeriCorps State or National program.
- Available to work 7.5 hours per day full-time or part-time schedule (Tuesday-Saturday).
LIVING ALLOWANCE:
AmeriCorps members will be provided a living allowance for their service of up to $3,693 for the 300 hour service term. The living allowance is subject to income tax withholding. Please note the living allowance payment is a flat amount based on the member’s total hour commitment, not the number of hours served in each two-week period, and will be prorated based upon the member’s start date. Payment will cease when the member’s service ends, which will be no later than August 19, 2023. Receiving the full living allowance is contingent on participation in the full program.
