3 reasons why your campus NEEDS native plants!

Looking to give your students new learning experiences? Plant a native garden! Here are three reasons why NOW is the perfect time to start.

1. It’s HEALTHY!

Did you know kids learn more when they’re given time outdoors? It’s true! Not to mention, time in green spaces is proven help kids focus and reduce the effects of ADD and ADHD.

A native plant garden is a great way to get your students into the fresh air AND engaged. On-campus gardens offer a hands-on opportunity to explore ecology, biology and even history, since many plants in Southern California were historically used by indigenous people!

2. They’re drought-friendly and easy to maintain!

Why plant something that will need intensive care including regular pruning, fertilizers and lots of water when we’re in drought? Plant natives, instead. Native plants have adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, making them ideal for our climate.

Many California natives require very little water once established and almost no pruning. (PS: the coming storms make NOW the perfect time to put plants in the ground!)

3. It will make your edible garden bloom!

Do you have an edible garden on campus? Native plants will attract natural pollinators, like hungry butterflies and hummingbirds. That’s good news for your veggie gardens!
