Do You Know Your Native VS Non-Native Plants? QUIZ
Here in Southern California, the work that TreePeople does - especially in the surrounding mountains and wildland areas - involves restoring the land to a state in which native plant species can thrive and help the land. In fact, our native plants that have evolved with our ecosystems are more fire resilient and have better chances of surviving wildfires (see example here). This means we spend a lot of time removing non-native, invasive species from our planting sites.
We find non-native plants like Shortpod Mustard everywhere and their presence can contribute to a myriad of problems that inhibit the growth of native plant species that could otherwise thrive in our area. This kind of invasive plant dries out during the long hot summer months and ends up acting as a flash fuel that helps to accelerate the spread of wildfires.
So we invite you to take this quiz and test your knowledge. Hopefully, you’ll see how many invasive plants surround us and you can educate your community about their threats to Southern California!
Good luck!
