A TreePeople Citizen Forester is a community member who, working closely with TreePeople, guides and supports their community to plant and care for trees in their neighborhood.
TreePeople’s Citizen Forestry program supports communities through the process of organizing
plantings of 12+ trees on streets or in parks in their neighborhoods. We will teach you everything you need to know about planting trees and help you carry out your goal from start to finish.
This is a 4 - 8 month- long process with the bulk of the work for the TreePeople Citizen Forester being in the initial portion of the process - building community support - and in the month leading up to the planting date - organizing logistics for the planting. Our Citizen Forester workshop provides all the information and tools you will need to organize a successful restoration, tree-care, or planting event.
Here is what we at TreePeople can provide for you and what you will be responsible for:
Attend the Citizen Forester workshop and at least one volunteer event prior to your own.
Build support within your neighborhood. This includes communicating and building relationships with local partners, landowners, business, and other stakeholders.
Fundraise. There are some items (such as trees and mulch) that are often available for free. However, other items may need to be purchased.
Organize the planting day, including recruiting volunteers from the neighborhood and food donations. We love the way planting projects can bring communities together and think that providing breakfast or lunch makes it even better!
Continue to care for the trees until they are established (generally three to five years). This includes creating a tree care plan and building a community tree care team to ensure your trees are healthy!
Our Commitment to You:
Provide advice, guidance, and support throughout the organizational process. This includes help obtaining trees and getting a permit or other official permission; advice on tree species and location; and more!
Assist with volunteer recruitment. We want as many community members as possible to come out and help, but understand that you may need more hands as well. We can advertise your event on our website and have volunteers sign up online.
Loan tools and help run volunteer events. For your first planting, we will come out (with tools) to lead the event with you. If you decide (as we hope you will!) to organize a second planting you will take the lead on running the event with TreePeople staff support. For all plantings after that, we will support you by loaning you tools and giving you advice!
Support with tree care advice and periodic volunteer tree care events throughout the establishment period. Our Tree Care Manager will step in to support you to ensure that your trees thrive!

Begin thinking about the following questions:
What type of a project are you interested in?
In what neighborhood or park do you want to plant?
How many trees do you want to plant?
Do you have community support at this point?
Do you have any funding?
Other questions or concerns you might have for us.
