Native Plant Nursery Internship

TreePeople was founded forty years ago by a teenager and is responsible for planting more than 2 million trees in Los Angeles mountains, streets, schools and neighborhoods.
Will assist in the maintenance and operation of TreePeople’s nursery. This facility is responsible for producing plant and seed material used in TreePeople’s Santa Monica Mountains Restoration program. This position requires a wide range of skills including horticultural abilities, technical documentation, fieldwork, equipment care, and maintenance.
Wildland Restoration Manager
Maintain nursery stock through regular maintenance such as irrigation, weeding, and seed crop collection.
Maintain production records and assist with inventory updates.
Assist with creating soil mixes, fungal inoculant, compost, and worm farming.
Assist with propagation and transplanting.
Assist with pest and disease scouting and control.
Assist with special projects as needed.
Maintain native seed bank stock by tracking blooming natives and wildcrafting seed from existing project sites by regular field hikes.
Qualifications and Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each task satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. The successful candidate will be required to work and train alongside the Wildland Restoration Manager as well as regular nursery volunteers for a minimum of 20 hours a week. An ideal candidate will possess a substantial combination of all requirements.
B.A. or B.S. preferred. Undergraduate student in horticulture, biology, environmental studies, agriculture, or related field will be considered.
Candidate must demonstrate a working knowledge of a wide variety of plant species of local Mediterranean species representing woodlands, grasslands, riparian, chaparral, and coastal sage scrub found in the Santa Monica Mountains. Experience working safely with hand and power tools. Must be computer literate and able to utilize Windows software (MS Word, Access, Excel), Google docs, and Apple savvy is a bonus. Self-motivation, initiative, and reliability are essential.
Applicants must be in good physical condition. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Position involves functioning in nursery, field, and office environments.
Physical requirements include:
- Hike over rugged terrain.
- Lift and move 50 pounds.
- Have a valid California driver’s license and a vehicle to drive to the nursery or seed collection/ restoration sites.
- Specific vision abilities required are close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The office and nursery environments have moderate noise levels and are non-smoking areas. Field conditions are h3ly weather dependent and may be hot, dusty, cold, muddy, and/or wet depending on the season (although conditions are usually fairly mild).
Type of position:
Minimum 3 month commitment, 20 hours per week. School credit available. This is an unpaid internship, but compensation includes TreePeople shirt, name badge, career experience in an adaptive management paradigm, admission to certain State Parks and nature preserves, continuing education opportunities.
