Citizen Arborist Program

Is the health of the urban forest important to you?

Become a Citizen Arborist! By becoming a Citizen Arborist, you will be on the front lines of growing a healthy urban forest and improving the environment of Los Angeles.

A Citizen Arborist is a community member who receives comprehensive training in industry standard tree maintenance practices and who uses their training to care for trees and be a resource to educate, train, and support other community members in the continual care of the Los Angeles urban forest.

Taking Action

Citizen Arborists form a trusted network of highly trained community members who care for trees and address tree maintenance issues in their local neighborhoods.  They help lead local community tree care events, and mentor community tree care teams so that the city’s tree canopy grows and thrives.

Training

To become a Citizen Arborist you must complete the FREE seven week training program. It consists of 24 hours in class study and 20 hours of field work after which you receive an official Citizen Arborist certificate. You will benefit from practical hands-on training by professional arborists bringing expertise to such topics as how to plant and care for trees, tree anatomy and physiology, pruning, pest and disease management, and tree identification.

2013 Training Dates

(Saturdays 9 AM to 1 PM)

Requirements

As a Citizen Arborist you agree to be part of TreePeople’s citywide tree care network.  While you are providing tree care to your community you will also be asked to make yourself available to support other folks in your local area.  This may include answering questions via email or phone, or going to look at a tree onsite.  Every 3 years you are expected to have completed 60 hours of community work to renew your status as a Citizen Arborist. Minimum requirement of 10 hours completed each year.

Apply

While the program is free, it is meant for those who want to be trained as a resource for their community. If you are a match for the program we will send you a confirmation of your admittance and information on the upcoming class schedule. Other applicants will be directed to a training that best fits their goals.
