10/14/2023 Teresa James

The Actors Conservatory Ensemble return to the S. Mark Taper Foundation Amphitheatre for marvelous new season of Once Upon A Canyon Night! For over 20 summers, the Actors Conservatory Ensemble has partnered with TreePeople to bring the very best in music, comedy, theater, and more.

Here’s what people are saying about Teresa James and her band:

Levon Helm – “Teresa James is a true original. When she sings you can feel it in your bones.”

Blues Matters magazine - “the girls voice does the talking alright with a knife edge when she wants rip your ears off or your heart out!”

The Pasadena Weekly – “She is one of the most honest, gutsy, incredible singers you'll find. The Texas-bred James takes creative chances, investing amazing soul and spirit in her music.”

Teresa James was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She starting playing piano at 5 and hasn’t stopped since. Called a singer’s singer by many, she has recorded with Walter Trout, Eric Burdon, Spencer Davis, Tommy Castro, Stephen Bruton, Randy Newman, LeeRoy Parnell, Neil Diamond, and many others. She has performed live with lots of other artists, including: Marcia Ball, Levon Helm, Lloyd Jones, Delbert McClinton, and Eric Burdon & the Animals to mention just a few.

Relocating to Los Angeles in the 80’s, her band, the Rhythm Tramps, is made up of world class players that have toured or recorded with such artists as Eric Burdon & the Animals, Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Taj Mahal, Jimmy Reed, Lightin’ Hopkins, Jimmy Vaughan, Johnny Nash, just to name a few and their songs have been recorded by many other artists. They move easily through Texas style grease and blues into Memphis soul or New Orleans flavored grooves and all points in between. In addition to having toured all over N. America and Europe, she has been one of the featured acts on Delbert McClinton’s Sandy Beaches Cruise for over 20 years.

Her recordings have met with rave reviews (including several 4 star reviews from Downbeat Magazine) and have shown up on radio charts all over the world. Her 2019 release, ‘Here In Babylon’ was nominated for a Grammy for Contemporary Blues Album. She was nominated in 2008 and 2022 by the Blues Foundation for “Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year” and her last release, an album of Beatle songs reimagined from a blues/soul perspective was released in January 2023 and debuted at #9 on the Billboard Blues sales chart. She and the band just released “Rose Colored Glasses, Vol.2 - a CD of songs written and recorded during the pandemic.

A final note from Bill Bentley for Sonic Boomers: “This is the stuff they don't teach you in school… These are the keepers of the unknown language. Teresa’s voice is all-knowing, like she's been to the places most of us aren't able to go. It is a mixture of rejection and redemption, … be glad there are still people like Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps who care enough to do this and share their spirits. Each and every one of them should receive a letter jacket with a big "S" for soul on it. Class dismissed.

Based on one audience suggestion (a title of a show that has never been written), The Improvised Shakespeare Company® creates a fully improvised Shakespearean masterpiece right before your eyes. Prepare for an evening of spontaneous comedy using the language and themes of William Shakespeare. Nothing has been planned out, rehearsed, or written. All of the dialogue is said for the first time, the characters are created as you watch, and if ever you're wondering where the story is going...so are they! TimeOut Chicago calls it “Staggeringly Brilliant” and “Downright Hilarious!” You've never seen the Bard like this before!

The Improvised Shakespeare Company® is one of the funniest and most critically acclaimed improv troupes in the world. The ISC was founded in Chicago in 2005 where it ran to sold-out audiences at the iO Theatre for over a decade. In 2018 Sir Patrick Stewart presented The ISC at the Soho Theatre in London. In the 2019-2020 season, The ISC was featured in the Broadway Series at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts where it wowed audiences throughout its178-show residency. 9/9/2023 Comedy Night: Tehran & Friends

Named to honor his father’s birth city, Tehran Von Ghasri is a true comedian of the world. Himself a native of one of the world’s great capitals, Washington D.C., early on Tehran showed hints of his unique future. By 18, he spoke six languages, and today he performs in concert halls in Farsi. Though his goal was to be a performer, he still got his MBA and graduated law school in D.C. while simultaneously starting his Los Angeles comedy career.

Tehran’s comedy tackles the most difficult, divisive topics and can still bring his audiences together in laughter. He is almost without doubt the funniest Black, Iranian, Jewish, Baptist, Muslim, Zoroastiran and agnostic comedian in the world. But if there is one characteristic that separates Tehran from all other performers, it is his unequalled charisma. He oozes it. He lights up every room he enters.

It is that charisma, along with his energy and unadulterated love for pleasing audiences, that makes him one of the world’s best comperes. He has hosted TEHRAN THURSDAYS at the legendary Hollywood Laugh Factory for the last eight years, bringing, among other star guests, Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Hart, Ray Romano, and Dave Chappelle to his sold-out stage.

Tehran has a unique ability to grab the audience, get them to consider some of society’s biggest issues, and end it with punchlines that create truly explosive laughter. It’s that quality that Omid Djalili noticed, making Tehran his special guest star of his recent BBC-TV pilot; and why Tehran was hired to be part of Kevin Hart’s new game show pilot, and why one of Hollywood’s top production companies is creating an animated TV series from one of Tehran’s ideas.
